Abstract:
Traditional education has not been preparing students with first day employable skills. This is a national finding, and the result has been a renewed emphasis on skill-based learning. Every student- high school, two-year college, four-year college, will be provided the opportunity to participate in a School to Career program. This will provide them with industry internships, and also those skills that will enable them to succeed in the business world. Briarwood College has successfully used this approach for many years. Business benefits from such a program because it obtains workers who are better suited to its needs. The basic ingredient for such success is a close relationship between business and the academic community.

About the Speaker:
Dr. Richard Rausch received his Doctor of Education from Columbia University in 1970, with his thesis in the area of regional education planning and services. During the course of his extensive career, he has served as an educator and an administrator for the Riverside School, Webster Hill School, Danbury Public Schools, Southern Connecticut State University, and Briarwood College. Dr. Rausch was the first director of RESCUE (Regional Education Services Center through Unified Effort), in Bridgewater, Connecticut. In 1997, he was the recipient of the Southern Connecticut State University Distinguished Alumnus Award. Currently, Dr. Rausch is the President of Briarwood College in Southington, CT

Letter from The chairperson

Dear Chapter Members:

By now, all Chapter members should have received their 1999 Roster. If not, please contact me so that one can be sent to you. Any misprints or errors should be reported as well so that corrections can be made for our "Millennium" Roster. We owe much thanks to Joe Kubinski for his time and effort in collecting all of the information and putting it in photo ready form. Grant Gatzen and Kevin Wilson also assisted in the Roster’s completion – thank you!

Our May technical meeting will have a different twist to it. We will jointly meet with the Uconn AMS Student Chapter and TMS. Prior to our main speaker that evening, we will have three brief talks by UConn students. They will be competing for "best overall presentation" to be decided by the meeting attendee. Your vote is needed.

I had the pleasure of attending the 50th CT Science Fair at Quinnipiac College. Our young people have great imaginations and should be applauded for their efforts in presenting fine displays. Our Chapter awarded two $100 Savings Bonds. One student did an investigation and exploration of the slow decomposition of the R.M.S. Titanic by rust. The other winner studied the effects of acid rain on metals.

This edition of the Macrogram addresses the Hartford Chapter 1999 – 2000 Executive Board. The following individuals have been nominated:

  • Chair - Joe Kubinski
  • Vice Chair – Harley Graime
  • Secretary – Arnie Grot
  • Treasurer – Grant Gatzen
  • Members at Large – Kevin Wilson, Tara Gigliello, Sunil Jha, Amanda Sousa, John Rugh, and Stu Weiss

On behalf of the Chapter, I want to thank John Rugh for his March presentation on electron beam welding. We appreciate PTR Precision Technologies for sponsoring our social hour.

Sincerely,
Linda Thomas - Chairperson Hartford Chapter
