Department of Economic Development (DECD), is under
consideration. A cluster is a group of industries that
create products and services related by a common
technology, market or need, and the firms that support
these businesses. This presentation will discuss the
following issues related to creating an Advanced
Materials Cluster. 1-Materials are an Enabling Technology
in Connecticut Companies. 2-What are Common Materials
Problems for Small/Medium Sized Companies? 3-Some
possible Initial Themes for Advanced Materials Cluster.
These will be discussed in light of the fact that for an
Advanced Materials Cluster to form and thrive it must be
driven by the Connecticut materials industries.
A discussion will follow the overview About the Speaker: Professor Marcus is a Professor of Metallurgy and Materials Engineering and Director of the Institute of Materials Sciences, University of Connecticut, Storrs, Connecticut. He received his B.S. in Metallurgy from Purdue University in 1963 and his Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering from Northwestern University in 1966. After nine years of industrial experience he was at the University of Texas at Austin for 20 years prior to coming to U-Conn in 1995. His research areas are in fracture of structural materials, materials science of surfaces and materials processing in particular solid freeform fabrication. He is a Fellow of ASM, and also active in TMS, ASTM, and MRS.

For any company seeking solutions to challenging materials problems, this is a meeting not to miss. You are encouraged to participate in this opportunity to explore how a Materials Cluster Group can benefit you and your company. Please pass the word throughout your company. This is not restricted to ASM member companies, so please feel free to contact any company in CT that may benefit from understanding what a relationship with the Material Cluster could do for their business. We had a great turnout at the last meeting of people coming for their membership awards. Thanks to all who came to be recognized! For all those who are due an award, it will be our pleasure to recognize you at a future meeting. The slate of officers for the upcoming year is listed below.
