Abstract:  The speakers will discuss metal injection molding (MIM) and its applications. The method combines the technologies of plastics injection molding with extremely fine powders from the powdered metal industry to produce a dense and structurally sound part. Intricate molded parts are made with MIM. The metal powder flow is aided by a polymeric binder which is subsequently eliminated by heating or other methods. The meeting will provide an opportunity for plastics engineers and metallurgists to learn together about an important new method of processing metal using long standing plastics technology.

Both John Chion and D. J. Lauck have degrees in mechanical engineering and are well qualified in MIM technology.

CHAIRMAN'S LETTER

Dear Members:

Thank you for an excellent attendance at the November meeting. I am sure it was the subject matter of Thermal Spray Coatings, not just the charm of the speaker, Elaine Strock, that brought you to the Hartford location.

Thank you, Elaine, for your informative enthusiastic presentation of customizing thermal spray coatings.

Joe Zucco is requesting the membership for contacts in the area of student attention-getting devices, equipment, performers, or whatever that can be obtained at nor or low cost to appear during Materials Week in April (14-18). The objective is to have attractions at the UCONN campus that draw high school students in, then we have to show them how material sciences contributed to that attraction. The future of our society and industry relies upon our success in bringing in our replacements.

Hope to see you at the joint meeting on Wednesday, January 8, 2003.

Networking to help you succeed through ASM Hartford,
Stu Weiss
