Abstract:
Throughout the Industrial Age, machines have been key enablers in the progress of society. Over the past century, mechanical technology has been complemented and, in some cases, replaced by electronic technology. Recently, significant advances have been made in micromachining in which fully functional devices can be manufactured on size scales less than 1 mm. The greatest complexity and the smallest size have been achieved in devices manufactured directly onto the surface of a silicon wafer. Devices and assemblies that have been manufactured include power supplies, motors, pins and linkages, gears and diaphragms. A variety of applications have been and are being developed including accelerometers, micropumps, and mechanical interlocks. The special design considerations needed to create micromachines, the methods needed to manufacture them, the limitations and advantages of their use will be discussed along with a variety of example applications.

About the Speaker:
Dr. Romig is Director, Microsystems Science, Technologies and Components, Sandia National Labs, Albuquerque, NM. He received his B.S. and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in material science and engineering from Lehigh University in 1975, 1977 and 1979 respectively. Dr. Romig has more than 150 technical publications and has co-authored three textbooks and holds two patents. His personal technology interests include materials and processes for electronic packaging, materials characterization via electronic microscopy and the modeling of microstructural evolution during materials processing and in-service aging.

Letter from The chairperson

We had an excellent start for the 1998-1999 ASM Hartford Chapter "season". Thanks to all of you who participated in the monthly dinner meetings thus far. Hopefully the momentum will sustain itself and we’ll see a successful second-half term.

Dr. Romig, immediate Past President ASM International will be our guest speaker for the January Technical Meeting. The Hartford Chapter is hosting this meeting with the Uconn Student Chapter. We welcome them as well as Dr. Romig.

The Chapter wishes to thank Roger Fabian for his presentation on "Technology in the Modern Heat Treat Plant". Our appreciation goes to Lindberg Heat Treat for sponsoring the November meeting social hour.

Submission of nominations for Officers and Trustees are due prior to March 15, 1999. Please contact me at (800) 537-5551 with your nomination(s).
