Letter from The chairperson

Dear Members:

We are coming up to an exciting time in our Chapter year.  We have the honor of have Mr. Andrew Nicoll, an ASM International Trustee, visit us for our next meeting.  Having an ASM Trustee visit the Hartford chapter has become an annual event for us.  This gives us both an opportunity to discuss ways we can improve our chapter and also have an expert in the field of thermal spray coatings speak to us.  We hope that our membership will make every attempt to come out to this meeting.

At this monthly meeting we honor our Sustaining Members.  They are the companies that through their efforts and generosity play a major role in supporting the activities of the Hartford Chapter.  Please note their names on the back of every Macrogram.  If your company would like to become a sustaining member of the Hartford Chapter please contact me.

Applications for our annual scholarship award are available from Arnie Grot.  This scholarship is open to any high school senior or undergraduate college student for study in the field of metallurgy or material science.  If you know of any one that qualifies, please have them call Arnie or myself for an application.

ASM also has a summer camp for interested materials minded students.  Contact Stu Weiss for details.

Plans are well underway for our celebration of Materials Week in CT, April 16-20.  Our chapter meeting will be held at UCONN on April 17 with Dr. Roger Couch, Astronaut and Chief Scientist of the International Space Station as our guest speaker.  We have invited Governor Rowland to participate by presenting a Proclamation of Material’s Week in CT.

March also marks the annual CT Science Fair.  The Hartford Chapter participates and awards US Savings Bonds to two winners from the outstanding displays presented.

It is with regret that we accept the resignation of Dr. Sunil Jha from the Hartford Chapter Executive Board.  Sunil has accepted a new position and is moving to Maryland, home of those famous Baltimore Ravens.  We will miss him and wish him our best.

Anyone wishing to become active and participate in chapter affairs should contact any member of the present board.  Our chapter needs members to stay active and healthy.  Join a winning team.

With best regards,

Harley Gaimes
