Social Hour sponsored by PTR-Precision Technologies

Reservations: Call Ann Marie at Allvac at (800) 537-5551 by noon March 8th

Abstract:
More than two dozen welding processes are in use today. The choice of process depends on dimensional, material, and cost considerations. One particularly flexible process is electron beam welding. It has been in commercial use for four decades in such diverse industries as aerospace, power generation, automotive and electronics. The reasons for choosing the electron beam welding process range from low heat input ( i.e. minimal thermal distortion), high depth to width rations, deep weld penetration capability, the ability to join dissimilar metals, cleanliness of the welds, and the potential for extremely high welding speeds. The fundamentals of the process and equipment, comparisons with laser and arc welding processes, examples of recent electron beam welding applications, and recent equipment and process advances will be discussed.

About the Speaker:
John Rugh is the Regional Sales Manager for PTR-Precision Technologies, Inc. in Enfield, CT. PTR and it’s predecessors have been manufacturing electron beam welding systems since the early 1960’s and have been leaders in the field. Prior to joining PTR, John worked in the Chemical, Metallurgical, and Welding group at Pratt & Whitney in Middletown, CT. He received his BS in Metallurgical Engineering from the University of Pittsburgh in 1983 and his MBA from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1991. He has been an ASM member since 1981

Letter from The chairperson

Dear Chapter Members:

I want to extend my thanks to Henry Boyton of Tiffany and Co. for his informative "behind the scenes" presentation on high quality jewelry manufacturing. Unfortunately, he had no "samples" to distribute. But, nonetheless, the evening was enjoyed by all. A special thanks to those spouses who elected to join us for the dinner meeting.

We also want to extend our appreciation to Carpenter Specialty Alloys for hosting the social hour.

1998 – 1999 scholarship applications are available. We will present a $1000 prize to the most qualified candidate at our May meeting. Deadline for applications is April 15th. Contact Harley Grimes at (860) 522-3123 for more information.

The Southern Chapter is offering "Metallurgy for the Non-Metallurgist" March 3 – May 5, 1999. The class will be held on Wednesday 6 – 8 pm at Briarwood College in Southington. Contact James Michel at (203) 389-6065 or Jack Sabo (203) 639-1338 if interested.

Submission of nominations for Officers and Trustees are due prior to March 15, 1999. Contact me at (800) 537-5551 with your nomination(s).

I look forward to seeing new and familiar faces for John Rugh’s presentation in March.

Sincerely,
Linda Thomas - Chairperson Hartford Chapter
