Technical Chairperson: Leon Shaw, UConn Social Hour sponsored by: TBD Speaker Bio: The Speakers tonight will be three UCONN graduate students in the Department of Metallurgy and Material Science who will give short descriptive talks about their research work this past year competing for prize money. They will illustrate their project talks with slides, overheads and posters to enhance our understanding of their work. Prizes will be given to the first, second and third place winners determined by the vote of the audience of our attending members. Does this make them professional students? Abstract: The research work covered by the students of IMS covers a vast range of metallurgical and material science using the latest in laboratory equipment. Anyone in attendance at the April meeting saw the poster display that the students put on and they looked very professional to me. Now you can hear about their research work.

Letter from The
chairperson Dear Members: The April meeting of the Hartford Chapter was a blockbuster. The afternoon seminar by "Dr. Flush", Don Rethke of Hamilton Sunstrand and the evening after dinner talk by astronaut and scientist Roger Crouch packed the house (Photo Highlights). The added attractions of the UCONN students' poster contest and the presentation of the Southern CT's "Engineer of the Year" Award and the Materials Week 2001 in CT Proclamation by Governor Rowland helped to make it a great meeting. They should all be that way. Nominations for next year's Executive Board are listed elsewhere in this Macrogram. Anyone interested in participating in the chapter administration should contact a Board member for details. Our chapter needs members to stay active and healthy. Join a winning team. Applications for our annual scholarship award have been received and we look to announce the winner at the next meeting. One of the most interesting parts of our chapter functions is interacting with the students at UCONN. These talented men and women are the future of metallurgy and materials science here in Connecticut or wherever they choose to settle. Their professionalism as exemplified in the poster contest held last month was outstanding. This month they will present their research work for prizes. It pays to come and meet and hear them. With best regards, Harley Gaimes Executive Committee
