Abstract:

Technical developments from the latest in PVD coating technology serving the tool and components industry are reviewed. Standard PVD coatings such as TiN, TiCN and TiAlN will be reviewed. Applications and details of the ongoing success with TiAlN will be discussed, as well as new breakthroughs in microstructural and compositional design of aluminum-based coatings. Modified friction properties with the addition of MoS2 to produce lubricant coatings, and a general discussion of wear properties and friction modification will provide a broad perspective and better understanding of the benefits of high performance PVD coatings.

Speaker's Bio:
Mr. Lang is National Sales Manager for MPI, a job shop heat treater and PVD coating house. Mr. Lang holds numerous certificates for brazing, heat treating, and metal cutting, and enjoys engineering successful applications for PVD thin films. He is a member of the ASM and the SME.

CHAIRMAN'S LETTER

Stu Weiss, our vice-chairman, and Jerry Clupper, a past chairman of ASM Southern Connecticut, lead a team of dedicated members from both chapters who conducted Materials Week in Connecticut events at three venues on April 16, 17 & 18. Those attending any of the events had high praise for the quality of the programs. Typical of the comments were the remarks sent to me by Tony Bivona, who accepted $1300 from the Hartford and Southern Connecticut Chapters for Project Lead the Way at Old Saybrook High School, "I just wanted to tell you what a wonderful time I had at the ASM Materials Conference. It was a pleasure meeting all of your colleagues and sharing information during a wonderful dinner. I found the presentation by Joe Epperson fascinating and was very excited to share the information with my daughter, Jenna." Some photographs from the events are included on our website.

You will want to be at both our May 14 and June 11 meetings to round out a successful year. I look forward to following through on the momentum of Materials Week as we close out a rewarding and memorable year.

Join the UConn Student Outreach Road Show Team
The goal of the road show is to make learning engineering principles fun and exciting through the use of live materials demonstrations. The students have received rave reviews at the recent Connecticut Innovation Expo, at middle schools and at two of our three Materials Week in Connecticut events. The will be appearing at the CPTV's Family Science Expo on May 1-4. Join the half-dozen industry professionals who have already signed up to team with the students. Teams of one student and one industry professional will perform the show live before a middle school audience.
