Next ASM Hartford Meeting on June 10, 2003
The June meeting will feature Ron Biederman of WPI and a past chairperson presenting a study of failed steel beams from Bldg. 7 at WTC.

The building was not hit directly by the airliners, but it did burn and collapse. The failure mode was hot corrosion! He has great photomicrographs.

That meeting also will honor the past Chairpersons of the Chapter.

CHAIRMAN'S LETTER

Dear Members:

he two events of Materials Week were well attended. On Tuesday, April 8th close to four hundred (400) high school students were at The New England Air Museum to view the materials used by twelve (12) exhibitors. Many students showed interest by the nature of their questions.

Each bus load of students were greeted and given a brief introductory talk by one of the following ASM member: Martin Blackburn, Jerry Clupper, Arnie Grot, & Jack Woodilla.

In general the event was well received by the students and teachers. Some teachers had given specific assignments to their students, which involved questions to the exhibitors and items at the museum.

The regular meeting on the night of April 10 was well attended by members of both Chapters. Mr. Kane delivered an energetic overview of Project Lead The Way, which is an independently funded national program to establish pre-engineering studies in the high schools. The State of Connecticut actively supports the effort with presentations throughout the State.

A Federal funded program addressing education of disabled high school persons for Hi-Tech careers is administered by Ms. Suzanne Liquerman. This young ambiguous program has made progress in a few areas of the State. External (such as, ASM members) is required to spread the program, and to be mentors. You can reach Suzanne at (860) 713-5057.
