Abstract:
A major advance is underway as industry is replacing hard chrome with coatings deposited by the HVOF thermal spray process. Critical components such as aircraft landing gears and earth mover hydraulic cylinders need tough, durable surfaces to fight wear and corrosion. Electrolytic hard chrome (EHC) fit the bill to some extent but its environmental impact due to hexavalent chromium waste disposal lately has made it prohibitive. A novel, ecologically friendly alternative is a versatile array of carbide and alloy coatings formed by the High Velocity Oxygen Fuel (HVOF) method. As a primer for its use in your business, the talk will first survey the negatives of using EHC and the benefits of HVOF. This will lead into the spectrum of available coating systems and their unique properties. Finally, a review of salient case studies across a range of industrial and commercial applications will show that the HVOF process is a viable method for replacement of hard chrome platings.

About the Speaker:
Marc received his BS in Metallurgical Engineering from the University of Cincinnati in 1984. He continued at the UC and completed his MS studies on Thermal Barrier Coatings in 1986. Since graduating, March has worked for several companies involved in the thermal spray industry, including GE Aircraft Engines where Marc received GEAE’s "Manufacturing Engineer Award" and was awarded a US patent for his coating work. Marc is currently the Manager of Material Development at Engelhard Surface Technologies, focusing on development of new coating systems/applications and improving the reliability of existing industrial standards.

Letter from The chairperson

Dear Chapter Members:

With Spring in full swing and summer approaching, most or you are preparing your law tractors, mowers and garden equipment for the season. But, hold on to your grass seed! The May technical meeting promises to be different and exciting. It will be a joint meeting with the TMS and the UConn ASM Student Chapter. Three graduate students will give brief presentations on their "specialty". The attendees will select the best overall presentation given. Our main speaker will follow the "competition".

Members are requested to participate in the 1999- 2000 Executive Board. If you are interested in being a board member, please call me at (800) 537-5551. Nominations will close May 3rd . The current roster of candidates is:

  • Chair - Joe Kubinski
  • Vice Chair – Harley Graime
  • Secretary – Arnie Grot
  • Treasurer – Grant Gatzen
  • Members at Large – Kevin Wilson, Tara Gigliello, Sunil Jha, Amanda Sousa, John Rugh, and Stu Weiss

The ASM Hartford Chapter will be a co-sponsor of a Materials Cluster Workshop scheduled for June 16, 1999. Harris Marcus, Materials Science at UConn, will serve as a host/catalyst for discussions by members of the materials community to assess whether there is sufficient interest in a materials identity as part of a subcluster. Our Chapter has been asked to identify individuals or company representatives who would like to attend a workshop to discuss the subject. The intent is to identify common materials issues in Connecticut and establish whether these issues/problems are sufficiently important to form a subcluster to seek solutions. For more information contact Harris: office (860) 486-4623, fax (860) 486-4745 or email: hmarcus@mail.ims.uconn.edu or visit The Advanced Materials Sub-cluster Workshop Web Page

Sincerely,
Linda Thomas - Chairperson Hartford Chapter
