Speaker Bio: Dr. Muzyka graduated from UMass with a BS in Mech. Eng., RPI with an MS degree and Dartmouth with his doctorate in Material Science. He started as a metallurgist and technical manager at Pratt & Whitney Aircraft, Carpenter Technology, Cabot Corporation and most recently with Special Metals Corporation. Dr. Muzyka joined Special Metals in 1990 as President and became President and CEO in 1996, retiring this past summer. He has had a distinguished career in the field of metallurgy, authoring numerous papers and patents and was honored with the ASM Fellow award in 1977. Abstract: The high output of nickel-based alloys and processes developed over the past 40-50 years led many to believe that the technology lifecycle was well into its mature phase and the potential for innovation was low. The new materials, composites and intermetallic compositions offer unique properties but at high costs. The development of nickel-based alloys has entered a new phase with new research tools and computers. Dr. Muzyka will discuss how the material technologist approaches a problem or opportunity today.

Letter from The
chairperson Dear Members: It is very exciting to look forward to the Joint meeting with the Southern Chapter featuring Dr. Don Muzyka as our speaker. He is well known in the metallurgy field and especially the Hartford area having worked at Pratt & Whitney with many of our members. I hope that you will come to hear Dr. Muzyka talk on the new developments in the high temperature alloy field. Our first meeting was held at the same time as the annual ASM Materials Week Conference in St. Louis. The attendance reflected this as many members were in St. Louis to attend the conference and watch our own Phil Pearson inducted as an ASM Fellow. We congratulate Phil on a well deserved award for a very distinguished career in materials and ASM International. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the generous sponsors of the Golf Outing tee ads and especially the prize donors: Allvac, Latrobe Steel, Weber Metals and HBO for their tremendous contribution. I mentioned the tournament winners last month but left out the sponsors whose generous support makes the tournament possible. I am also most proud to announce that our chapter has been awarded the prestigious 5-Star Award from ASM International. It is a tribute to our past chapter leadership and all of our members in reaching this goal. Lets do it again this year! With best regards, Harley Gaimes Executive Committee
