Letter
from The chairperson Dear Chapter Members: Please mark your calendars for the November 10th meeting. We will welcome one of our chapter members as our guest speaker. Roger Fabian, FASM, has been an ASM member since 1960. Congratulations to him and to all the other long-term members! Rogers presentation will cover the advances that have occurred during the past 10 years in the heat treating industry. Dr. Romig Jr., FASM, of Sandia National Laboratories will visit our Chapter on January 12, 1999. This meeting will be hosted along with the Uconn Student Chapter. Dr. Ronigs presentation is entitled "Micromachines: An Enabling Technology for the Future". Mechanical devices and machines have been key enablers in the progress of society. Significant advances have been made in micromachinng, in which fully functional mechanical devices can be manufactured on size scales less than 1 mm. Devices and assemblies that have been manufactured include power supplies, motors, pins, and linkages, gears and diaphragms. Accelerometers, micropumps and mechanical interlocks are applications that have been or are being developed. The special design considerations needed to create micromachines, the methods needed to manufacture them, the limitations and advantages of their use will be discussed along with a variety of example applications. I am looking forward to seeing you at
the upcoming meetings. |
