Abstract: An overview of the Hot Isostatic Pressing Process (HIP) will be presented, with the effects of porosity on the mechanical properties of metals discussed. Covered will be advantages and disadvantages of the process, and capabilities illustrated through selected case studies. Examples will include the "healing" of solidification porosity in castings, the production of complex powder metallurgy near net shapes, diffusion bonding of metals, and microstructural refinement of materials within the HIP vessel. About the Speaker: Stephen Mashl joined Bodycote IMT, Inc. in 1998 as Manager of Research and Development. Steve provides technical support to Bodycote's four, North American HIP facilities and customers. The Bodycote R&D group is conducting studies on novel applications of isostatic densification processes. Steve obtained his BS, MS, and Ph.D. degrees in Metallurgical Engineering from Michigan Technological University. He worked 5 years in the steel making industry as a metallurgical engineer, quality supervisor, and melting supervisor. Graduate studies and research positions at the US Dept. of Energy - Ames Laboratory, Ames, Iowa and the Naval Research Laboratory, Washington, D.C. have concentrated on various aspects of powder metallurgy processing as well as liquid-particulate solidification.
