The Macrogram September ‘01

The connection from Connecticut to ASM International is growing. Don Muzyka, retired CEO and President of Special Metals, who was quite active in ASM in Connecticut when he worked for Pratt & Whitney was elected Vice President and Trustee of ASM International. Gordon Geiger was elected President. Gordon proudly takes credit for introducing Tony Giamei (FASM and active member of Southern CT Chapter) to materials engineering when Tony was a freshman and Gordon a senior studying metallurgy at Yale University. Both Don and Gordon will assume their offices in November at the Annual Convention.

Attending Leadership Days on August 17-19 gave me the opportunity to experience the history and people behind ASM International. Materials Park was built on several hundred acres donated to the society by Bill Eisenman in 1959. Allan Ray Putnam, who succeeded Eisenman as Managing Director, dedicated the geodesic dome, which was designed by R. Buckminster Fuller, and Metals Park in 1960. Eisenman's farm and house is adjacent to the entrance of Materials Park. A herd of llamas welcomes visitors in the front pasture. Putnam commissioned the first of a series of paintings of the geodesic dome by native buckeye materials professional and artist, Florian K. Lawton. Four of his wonderful paintings hang throughout Materials Park and are worth taking note of when visiting. I had the pleasure of sitting next to Florian and his wife during dinner under the dome.

The 2001-2002 Hartford Chapter year is shaping up to be one of the best due to the volunteer work of many of our members. Our chapter mission is simply to excite people statewide in materials careers. The members of your Executive Committee hope that you will join us in one or more of these following projects as well as attend many of our meetings and events. These offer unique opportunities for all members to contribute to the future of our materials profession and society as by preparing our future leaders. Please join in one or more of them. You will get more back than what you put into any of these projects. Doing so will help spark more excitement in your profession and career.

Scholarships are now awarded from the Chapter's operating budget. Tax-deductible contributions can be made to this ASM Hartford Scholarship Fund.
  • Materials Week Events (April 15-19, 2002 with Stu Weiss coordinating) with Southern CT - perhaps on a Forensic Engineering theme and perhaps live Student Outreach road shows with Industry participation (as a follow-on/promotion of Student Outreach Video if we get industry volunteers; coordinated through UConn Student Chapter.)
