CHAIRMAN'S LETTER
Our last meeting of the 2003-2004 Chapter year on June 8 will be a celebration. Awards, Scholarship & Sustaining Member Night continues our mission of breaking through to and focusing on our people in a way that sends them energy and brings out the best in them.

The focus is on recognizing our individual and sustaining members and those students who directly benefited through association with ASM Hartford. The list is extensive. Look to the June 8 meeting description for more details. We are especially pleased that this summer we are sponsoring our fifth successful high school student applicant to attend Materials Camp in its five year history. Please meet them in celebration.

Our May 20 meeting is also our Annual Meeting. Jointly with the Southern Connecticut Chapter we offer the opportunity to tour the Waterbury Brass Mill. In the technical presentation after dinner, Mr. John Turley, Vice President - Engineering & R&D, T. Sendzimir, Inc., Waterbury , CT , will describe the most up-to-date design features of cold rolling mill equipment. Tour space is limited and so you will want to reserve your spot early. In the business meeting both the Hartford and the Southern Connecticut chapters will present their chapter’s slate of 2004-2005 officers. The Hartford slate of nominations was distributed in April and appears below.

Chapter leaders have established a head start on several events for 2004-2005. The Hartford Chapter 2004 Annual Golf Outing will be another Classic. Rebecca Gatzen has booked a shotgun start at Blackledge Country Club in Hebron for September 15, 2004 .

We are jointly sponsoring an intersociety technical symposium, The Hydrogen Economy, Fuel Cells and the Environment, that will address leading edge engineering, technical, environmental, and economic issues associated with the use of hydrogen as a fuel for motive and stationary power systems, and fuel cells with high efficiency fuel energy conversion capabilities. The symposium will be September 30 to October 2. More details of the symposium appear it the meeting description section of this newsletter.

To help achieve our mission of providing technical knowledge, education, networking and professional development we are introducing the ASM Hartford Apprenticeship/Mentor Program. Individuals, companies and the Chapter will benefit from the broad knowledge of materials issues and contacts obtained through this program. We are presently building a list of tours and workshops that will be part of the program. More details are found on our web site. Contact Jack Piela or me to add your company for at tour or workshop or to be part of this program.

A joint Hartford /Southern CT committee are developing preliminary plans for Materials Week, April 18-22, 2005. They are pursuing a day of displays and presentations highlighting unique applications of materials at the New England Air Museum that will reach young minds as well professionals. Please contact Joe Zucco to be part of this team.

The ASM Hartford winter meetings were rousing successes. Dr. Martin Blackburn gave us insights into the rising potential of Metallic Glasses at our January meeting. We were saddened with the passing Martin of in March. He was always comfortable both attending and presenting at our meetings. His insights into materials issues will be missed. Dr. Reza Abbaschian, FASM, ASM Trustee traveled from the University of Florida in February to give us an Overview of Advanced Materials, assess and help focus chapter operations and renew many frienText Box: dships at the University of Connecticut. His visit was just what ASM Hartford needed. At our March meeting, members selected Dafei Kang (1st place, c), Jessica Shen (2nd place, r), and Hong Lou (3rd place. l) for their research presentations.

Networking to help you succeed through ASM Hartford,
Arnie Grot
Executive Committee
