SOUTHERN CONNECTICUT CHAPTER
SERVING CONNECTICUT FOR OVER 85 YEARS
TECHNICAL MEETING ANNOUNCEMENT
THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 21, 2008

TOPIC: The Copper Rotor Motor – Energy Savings, Die Casting and Performance

The Copper Development Association has carried out research and development over the past 10 years to utilize copper in the squirrel cage rotor of induction motors. This effort has been an exercise in two disciplines: metallurgical casting practices and electrical engineering. The project has resulted in a growing market with over one million units in service and growing. The copper rotor motor (CRM) is, in itself, a very significant contribution to reducing power requirements on a global basis. The energy efficiency advantages are discussed in terms of potential global energy savings and the reduction of gaseous pollutants to the atmosphere. From the copper industry perspective, the CRM represents a sizeable new market for copper.

SPEAKER: Dr. Dale T. Peters, Senior Advisor, Copper Development Association

In 1997, Dale Peters initiated activity at CDA on the copper rotor motor and directed the program until his retirement in 1999. However, since 2000, he has again been closely involved with the technical and marketing direction of the program and has been the principal author of technical papers on this technology. He currently manages this program for CDA.
Prior to joining CDA, Dale was Technical director of the Metallurgy Program at the International Copper Association in New York . And  prior to working in the copper industry, he worked for INCO Ltd. In product research and development in Sterling Forest , NY . Dale received his BS degree in Metallurgical Engineering from the University of Cincinnati and his PhD for The Ohio State University. He had authored or co-authored more than 75 technical papers and holds several US and foreign patents.
