Meetings 2007-2008


Chapter meetings are held the second Tuesday of every month, from 6:30-9:30, at Cugino's (Unless otherwise noted). A social hour precedes each meeting, and a guest speaker is featured.

We have several special meetings, including Sustaining Members Night, Student Night, and a joint meeting with Southern Connecticut Chapter.

$28 for members with reservation, $15 for retirees and students (with identification).

Parking lot is in the rear of the restaurant (accessible via Market Sq. and Constance Liegh Dr. as well).


Due to cost of printing and mailing, ASM Hartford will publish just one issue of the Macrogram in the fall. This will come out in mid September. Therefore, it is particular important that you bookmark the ASM Hartford web site and check it regularly. We will continue to send out email notices to those on our distribution list prior to events.

    Student Night
    Over seventy research projects of the graduate students of UConn’s Materials Science and Engineering Program pass through extensive peer and faculty review with the best competing to be the three selected for presentation to the Hartford Chapter.

 

 


Student Night  on May 13, 2008
featured presentations by three graduate students of Material Science Engineering at the University of Connecticut in Mansfield, CT. The students are members of the UConn Student Materials Advantage Chapter. The students highlighted aspects of their research on various materials. Shown in the photo, from the left, are Thomas Sadowski, Jacquelynnn McGuinness Garofano (whose presentation was judged as the best), Sam Christy (Hartford Chapter Chairman), Fei Peng and Rainer Hebert (Faculty Advisor of the UConn Materials Advantage Chapter).

Winter/Spring 2008 Macrogram


Recipients of the ASM Hartford Chapter 2008 Scholarships were recognized on April 9, 2008 at the University of Connecticut School of Engineering Awards Banquet. Shown from the left are Dr. Leon Shaw (past ASM/TMS Chapter Advisor), Dr. Sam Christy (ASM Hartford Chair), Alexander Williams, James Bosse, Kevin Rankin (a 2005 recipient, who was recognized at the banquet with an Engineering Outstanding Senior Award for MSE),  Julie Ann Mackey, Arnie Grot (past ASM Hartford Chair) and Rainer Hebert (Materials Advantage Chapter Advisor).


Burc Misirlioglu (left) was recognized with the 2008 Doctoral Thesis Award on April 9, 2008 at the University of Connecticut School of Engineering Awards Banquet. In 2005 as a student, Dr. Misirlioglu took first place with a presentation based on his thesis research on Stress Relaxation and Phase Transformations in Ferroelectric Heterostructures at the ASM Hartford Chapter Student Night competitions. In June 2006, Burc started postdoctoral work at the Max-Plank Institute in Germany. He is currently a Postdoctoral Associate in the Department of Nuclear Science and Engineering at MIT in Cambridge, MA. Show with Burc is his major advisor, Professor S. Pamir Alpay.

Vice President
(a) The Vice President shall plan to maintain a strong organization and thus continue the objectives of ASM during the following year.
(b) The Vice President shall recommend all appointments for the following year to each Committee, including the Chairman, to take effect by and with the approval of the Board. He/She shall perform such other duties as are delegated to him/her by the President or the Board.
(c) The Vice President shall perform the duties of the President in case of the absence of the President or the inability of the President to act.
