Abstract:
Corrosion is the degradation of materials when exposed
to the environment.
The direct cost of corrosion in the US is estimated to be three
trillion dollars per year.
Corrosion can be prevented or at least reduced by one or more of
the following methods:
- Material selection
- Environmental control
- Corrosion inhibitors
- Coatings
- Cathodic protection
The Port Authority of NY & NJ own and manage unique and strategic facilities, which can not be shut down for any length of time. Thus, it is important to manage the corrosion in every structure by using the most up to date technology.
The challenge of the Corrosion Engineer is to work closely with all the other engineering specialties. To alert them of the potential corrosion problems. To propose solutions that are economical and practical i.e. can be incorporated in the design and construction without having a substantial impact on the budget and construction time.

Personal Note:
Victor worked closely with many of the Port Authority people
having responsibilities in the World Trade Center. Many had
offices in Tower One. He thanks you for your continued prayers
for those who lost their lives on September 11 and for their
families.
