Pre-Engineering Programs in Connecticut High Schools.

HISTORY: The program was first developed in the 1980's by Richard Blais who was then chairman of the Technology Department of a school district in upstate New York. Working with the New York State Education Department, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and Hudson Valley Community College, Blais and his staff began a process of reviewing, developing and testing a series of courses that incorporated the skills needed in engineering and engineering technology with the latest high-technology equipment and software. He and his department were supported by a Technology Advisory Board that he established in order to gain the expertise of people in industry and to garner support for the changes that were to be implemented in the curriculum. The members of the board went beyond their initial objectives, locating funds to help purchase equipment and materials for the program in its experimental stage.

WHAT IS PROJECT LEAD THE WAY:

Project Lead The Way Inc. (PLTW) is a national program forming partnerships among Public Schools, Higher Education Institutions and the Private Sector to increase the quantity and quality of engineers and engineering technologists graduating from our educational system. Early on, PLTW became partners with the High Schools That Work initiative of the Southern Regional Educational Board (SREB) with schools in 27 states. Currently, PLTW offers its program in 31 states from New York to California.

THE GOALS OF PROJECT LEAD THE WAY ARE:

Increase the number of young people who pursue engineering and engineering technology programs requiring a four or two - year college degree.

Provide equitable and inclusive opportunities for all academically qualified students without regard to gender or ethnic origin.

Provide clear standards and expectations for student success in the program.

Reduce the future college attrition rate with four and two-year engineering and engineering technology programs.

Provide leadership and support that will produce continuous improvement and innovation in the program.

Contribute to the continuance of America's national prosperity.
