| In recognition
of the 27th Anniversary of Materials Week, the
State of Connecticut honors the materials industries
which are among the oldest and most vital in Connecticut.
Our manufacturing, defense, building trades, commerce,
and transportation are some of the fields that rely
heavily on the materials industries and its associated
sciences. The materials related professional societies of Connecticut include the Southern Connecticut and Hartford Chapters of the American Society of Materials, the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers, Association of Women in the Metals Industry (AWMI), the American Chemical Society, the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, the Mineral, Metal, and Materials Society, the Society of Plastics Engineers, the American Foundrymen's Society, the American Welders' Society, the American Powdered Metals Federation, and the University of Connecticut's Institute of Material Science. The members of these organizations share an ongoing commitment to the advancement of these industries, by maintaining the highest degree of quality and professionalism in performance. These men and women continue to use their vast expertise to improve products and technology, and to help the industry grow through community outreach and education. In an effort to increase the awareness of the contributions, and advancements in the areas of metals, ceramics, and polymers, the societies support special orientation programs and sponsor numerous scholarships from grade school through the university, and technical college level in our state. In addition, they work to upgrade and expand the knowledge of professionals by providing educational courses and seminars covering new processes and techniques. As in past years, the two American Society of Materials Connecticut Chapters has provided leadership to these Societies and sponsored "Materials Week" in Connecticut to create a greater public awareness of the opportunities, achievements, and advancements that are made through materials. Therefore, I, John G. Rowland, Governor, in recognition of the 27th consecutive years of Materials Week and the outstanding contributions of the materials field to the quality of life in our state do hereby officially designate April 7-April 11, 2001 as MATERIALS WEEK in the State of Connecticut.
