The Southern Connecticut Chapter of ASM International has designated its February 21, 2002 meeting as its National Officer's Night. At this meeting the Chapter is pleased to present as the featured speaker Dr.
R. G. (Gil) Gilliland, a Trustee of our National ASM Organization and associate
laboratory director for the Energy and Engineering Sciences Directorate, Oak
Ridge National Laboratory. Dr. Gilliland received a B.S. Ch. E. and M.S. Met.
E. from the University of Tennessee in 1958 and 1963, respectively, and a Ph.D.
in Met. E. from MIT in 1968. D. Gilliland began his career as a research
metallurgist at Union Carbide Corp (ORNL) from 1958-1965. He was an associate
professor, metallurgical engineering, at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee
from 1968 to 1973. He was chief engineering works manager at Pelton Castell,
Inc., from 1973 to 1977 when he then became assistant general manager, Wehr
Corp. In 1979, he was named VP/general manager for Lukens, Inc. In 1985, he
became director, R&D, for Aluminum Company of America. From 1993 to 1995, he
was section head, Engineering Technology Division, at Martin Marietta Energy
System, ORNL. In 1995, he was promoted to director. He attained hi present
position in 1996. Having joined ASM in 1956, Dr. Gilliland was elected a Fellow
in 1994 and is a Life Member. He is the immediate past chair of the Technical
Programming Board an member of the Awards Policy Committee. He is also active
with the American Foundryman's Society, the Iron and Steel Society of the
American Institute of mining, Metallurgical, and Petroleum Engineers, the
Society for the Advancement of Materials and Process Engineering, the Industrial
Research Institute, and the American Welding Society. He is a registered PE,
holds several patents and has published more than 40 technical publications.
