TOPIC: LEAD PROJECTILES AND ALTERNATIVE PROJECTILE MATERIALS

Lead is the primary material used in small bore ammunition projectiles. In the late 1990’s, approximately 80,000 tons/year of lead was used to make projectiles in the United States, thereby introducing one hundred and sixty million pounds into the environment both on and off shooting ranges. It is estimated that US Armed Forces alone released approximately 20,000 tons of lead per year into the environment from small arms ammunition training.  Because of the environmental and health risks that occur from its use in both indoor and outdoor shooting ranges, lead used in ammunition requires replacement.

This talk will review the risks associated with the use of lead based materials for small bore ammunition projectiles and the risk reduction from other alternatives, non-lead and lead-less ammunitions. Of the choices presently available, the zinc projectile option appears to be the most attractive from an environmental health and safety view.
