DINNER MEETING: Rapps Paradise Inn,
Scanning optics for lasers is a galvanometric based
system where the part stays stationary and the laser beam is directed around
the part via high speed mirrors. Joining Technologies has been a leader in the
use of scanning optics. The company has several production units that stay busy
welding medical parts (252 spot welds in <12 seconds including two
reposition moves). A galvo can move the beam across a
2 working field in <20ms. Working fields vary with focal length. From 56mm dia. To
close to 200mm.
Direct Metal Deposition is basically depositing wire
on a surface of a material to build up the surface. DMD is currently heavily
used in the plastic injection mold industry and Joining Tech is taking this
technology into other more demanding applications such as aerospace overhaul
and repair. The key feature is that due to the rapid solidification of the
wire, tests have shown that Ti-6Al-4V deposition comes out harder (RC 32.93)
than the base material (RC 30.94). This can eliminate expensive, time consuming
and sometimes undesirable post processing.

an Applications Engineer receiving a patent for a laser process dealing with
pharmaceuticals. He first worked as an Applications Engineer for Coherent
