MEETING NOTICE
The Southern Connecticut Chapter of ASM International will hold its February technical dinner meeting Thursday, February 12, 2004. Over the past twenty-five years, metallographic specimen preparation has largely shifted from manual to automated procedures. This has fostered gains in both productivity and quality. In sectioning equipment, minimum-contact area cutters have improved performance and cut quality. Precision cutters have progressed from simple crude devices to very sophisticated systems. Mounting press automation has reduced or eliminated shrinkage gap formation, depending upon the resin used, which has improved edge retention and reduced or eliminated bleed-out problems. New consumables have been introduced and new preparation ideas that yield better surfaces in less time with greater reliability. Preparation methods have been improved, yielding perfect surfaces in fewer steps with greater reliability. The talk will illustrate these gains using specimens of a variety of compositions, chiefly in color.

George received his BS in Metallurgical Engineering from
Drexel in 1967. He received an MS degree in Metallurgy and Materials Science
from Lehigh University in 1974. George worked six years in the metallurgy
department of the Bethlehem Plant and was then transferred to their Homer
Research Laboratories as a research engineer. Nine years were spent in the
Metallurgical Service and Investigations group where George was involved in all
areas of microscopy, failure analysis work and alloy development. In 1983,
George joined Carpenter Technology Corporation as supervisor of Materials
Characterization in their research center. He was responsible for all areas of
microscopy and mechanical testing. In 1996, George joined Buehler Ltd. as
Director of Research and Technology. He edits their newsletter, Tech-Notes.
George has over 200 publications, including the book Metallography:
Principles and Practice (McGraw-Hill, 1984, ASM Intl., 1999, 752 pgs.).
